Spring Update
Hola Matadors!
It’s been a month. Both the Latinx Comic Fest and Wonder Con went well. I even got to meet a few of you in person which is always cool. My next shows are Comic-Con Revolution in Ontario, CA May 18-19 and Monsterpalooza in Pasadena, CA 5/31-6/2.
On the Monster Matador front, our pre-launch page for Monster Matador: Once Upon Some Monsters in Mexico #1-3 is LIVE. Click here to be notified on launch. Right now we are aiming for late-May. Here’s a look at the main cover and our Artist variant featuring Puis Calzada. Puis is best known for his work on CULT OF DRACULA for Source Point Press, Fangoria, and HELL ON SHIRTS.
If you’re not subscribed to Scott Snyder’s substack, I highly recommend it. There are paid and free tiers, but the best part is both tiers give you access to his comic writing classes. His most recent class, ACTION SCENES takes a look at Monster Matador: Tango of the Matadors #1 as an example of a well done action scene. Pretty cool. You can subscribe for FREE here.
Comics and Books
Right now I’m doing research for the next Matador arc. I’d tell you the name of the book, but it might spoil things so…
I just started reading Dune Messiah after having seen Dune Part 2 (highly recommended!). I’d read the first book years ago, but never got beyond it. No better time than now, I suppose.
Comic-wise I’ve mostly been catching up on Kickstarter books (I’m sure you know how that is!). 13 Last Chance from Jeff Leeds and a bunch of artists is a great collection of stories. Jeff took a public domain hero and put his own spin on it. It’s about a guy cursed with bad luck that is contagious and takes place in 50’s Vegas. Well worth seeking out. Also, Ex-Wives of Frankenstein #2 from Richard Fairgray, Evie and the Helsings #1 and 2 from Steve Bryant and Don Cardenas (#3 is Launching soon) and the beautiful Glarien: Short and Deadly hardcover collection from Charlie Stickney and murderer’s row of artists.
Movies
MVD had a sale so I’ve been knee deep in Shaw Brothers classic kung-fu movies for the past couple of weeks. First up was Hand of Death directed by a young John Woo and featuring Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung early in their careers. Fantastic fight scenes and choreography in this one. Then four classics from Director Chang Cheh, Shaolin Temple, The Five Venoms, Five Shaolin Masters and Crippled Avengers. Next is going to be The Postman Fights Back featuring an early role from GOAT Chow Yun Fat!
Also checked out the new Road House movie on Amazon which was a lot of fun. Definitely worth watching. Though I’m still partial to the original which is it’s own kind of crazy.
That’s all for now. Have a great week. And don’t forget to sign up get get notified for the next campaign!
